Andalusian Horse Journey in Spain 2015

Yoshiko Kumakura — Gotemba City, Shizuoka Prefecture

After watching Ken Utsui’s travel program on TV, I had decided that I would take this journey myself when I turned 80. However, I ended up embarking on this adventure ahead of schedule at the age of 77.

Near the end of the trek, I could no longer continue cantering and had to be led to the goal by Ignacio. It remains a deep regret for me. I am determined to challenge myself again at 80 and to bring my journey to a beautiful conclusion.

Aiko Ueno — Nagaizumi Town, Shizuoka Prefecture

I am deeply grateful that my mother's long-cherished dream was fulfilled so joyfully and, above all, safely, thanks to everyone’s support. As for my mother herself, she was very frustrated that she could not complete the canter. That very night, she began strength training in preparation for her "revenge" at the age of 80.

Yoshifumi Fujimoto — Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture

It was my first time riding a stallion. At first, I was startled by his heavy breathing, but he soon became a reliable companion for the journey.

Hitomi Nomura — Machida City, Tokyo

I caught a glimpse of the elegance of Spanish noble life, underpinned by the beauty of the Andalusians and the weight of history. While struggling with the triangular stirrups, I vowed to myself to build my physical strength and cultivate a spirit of greater composure. To everyone who supported us — "¡Gracias!"

I.K. — Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture

What I appreciated most this time was the "matching of horses". Normally, horses are assigned mechanically based on height, weight, and experience. I had always wondered why compatibility — such an important factor — was often overlooked.

But at Candaú, it was different. With their experienced judgment, they matched us accurately and allowed us to try riding several horses multiple times.

The partner I finally chose for the journey was Pepper, a charming and sweet-natured horse. I enjoyed every moment with her until the very last step.

If I could, I would fly to her side right now. To the Andalusians — ¡Salud!

Sachiko Nomi — Yokohama City

My partner horse was Cosaco (12 years old), the same horse once ridden by Ken Utsui. When I first rode him in the arena, he would veer toward the fence and neigh to the horses at pasture. However, once we ventured out on the trail, he became wonderfully easy to ride.

Visiting the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art, enjoying the huge paella outdoors, savoring the addictive local wine "MIURA" and homemade sangria — everything brought me joy. But above all, the greatest thrill was being allowed to perform the Spanish walk on Cosaco. Though far from perfect, I even attempted piaffe and passage — things I had never experienced even in Japan!

To Mr. Tanaka and all the members, thank you so much.

I am already looking forward to our "three-year reunion."
